Major Renewable Projects

By 2030 the Outer Hebrides is set to have a new 1.8GW subsea interconnector, High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) converter station and 400kV AC substation, located near Stornoway.

A pipeline of renewable projects at varying stages of consent and development are lined up to utilise the 1.8GW capacity.

Details of each of these projects can be found below.

SSE: Interconnector - Lewis Hub

The Lewis Hub will be a multi-substation connect point for sources of generation, such as wind farms and power stations, and export power to the wider grid. The Lewis Hub has two primary elements, an AC substation and HVDC converter station which are directly linked together.

Northland Power: Spiorad na Mara

Spiorad na Mara is a proposed offshore wind project with a potential expected capacity of c.900MW made of up to 65 fixed bottom wind turbines over an area of approximately 161km².

The project is owned by Northland (75.5%) and ESB (24.5%), with Northland leading on the development, construction and operation.

Location: c.5-13 kilometres off the west coast of the Isle of Lewis.

Magnora Offshore Wind: Talisk

Talisk is a proposed offshore wind project with a potential expected capacity of c.495MW made of up to 33 15MW floating wind turbines with concrete or steel floater.

The project is developed by Magnora Offshore Wind, a company owned by Magnora and TechnipFMC.Talisk is currently in the development phase and is aiming for consent application early 2027, and target consent in H1 2028, aiming for production start in 2030.

EuroWind Energy: Uisenis Wind Farm

Uisenis is a proposed onshore wind project c.20km southwest of Stornoway with a potential expected capacity of c.165MW, made of up to 25 wind turbines with a turbine tip height of up to 200m.

The site has an existing consent for the development of the Muaitheabhal Wind Farm, comprising 45 turbines with varying tip heights up to 150 m. Uisenis Wind Farm is located on the same site as Muaitheabhal Wind Farm within the Eishken Estate. If consented, the Uisenis proposal would be built instead of the 45 turbines associated with the Muaitheabhal consent.

BayWa r.e.: Druim Leathann

Being developed by BayWa r.e., the Druim Leathann Wind project will be located in the north-east of the Isle of Lewis. Spanning 261 hectares, this project will feature 14 wind turbines with a combined capacity of up to 49.7 MW. Upon completion, it is anticipated to produce enough green electricity to power approximately 36,500 homes each year.

The wind farm is currently in pre-construction phase.

RWE: Grimshader

Grimshader is a proposed onshore wind project with a potential capacity of c.99MW, made up of 15 wind turbines with a turbine tip height of up to 200m.

Grimshader is currently in the development phase.

Lewis Wind Power: Stornoway Wind Farm

Stornoway wind farm is a consented onshore wind farm with a potential capacity of c.200MW, made up of up to 36 turbines.

Lewis Wind Power, the developer of Stornoway wind farm, is a 50:50 joint venture between EDF Renewables UK and ESB.

Northland Power: Havbredey

Havbredey is a proposed floating offshore windfarm located off mainland Scotland, with a potential expected capacity of c.1.5GW made of up to 110 wind turbines over an area of approximately 391km².

The project is owned by Northland Power (75.5%) and ESB (24.5%), with Northland leading on the development, construction, and operation of the windfarm.

Havbredey is currently in the development phase with an estimated construction start date of 2032.
